The Earl of Rosse pioneered observation of faint detail in nebulae including the spiral structure of galaxies, with his self constructed telescope at Birr Castle in Ireland. Charles Parsons, his descendant, published these papers privately, and is better known as the inventor of the steam turbine - he built the engines for the Titanic based on this design.
